Field Survey on Sports Injury in Korean Athletes during the 21st Deaflympics

Abstract
The purpose of this study was to analyze sports injuries in Korean athletes during deaflympics, and to provide the essential information for Korea delegation against the next deaflympics. Detailed information on sports injury was collected by sports medical team during deaflympics with prospective surveillance study. Total 230 injuries were reported as musculoskeletal disorders. Among them, 130 injuries were acute, and 100 injuries were chronic with previous history. In acute musculoskeletal disorders, the highest prevalent event, type, and region were soccer, arthralgia, and knee, respectively. In chronic musculoskeletal disorders, the highest prevalent event, type, and region were badminton, muscle soreness, and lower limb, respectively. In addition, 10 injuries were reported as internal diseases and infection. Incidence rate(1000AE) and incidence proportion were 1494.9 and 0.67 in acute musculoskeletal disorders, 1164.9 and 0.44 in chronic musculoskeletal disorders, and 93.8 and 0.10 in internal diseases and infection on the average, respectively. As a result, our data indicated the characteristics and frequency, incidence rate, incidence proportion of sports injury during deaflympics, so these results could provide the effective information for prevention sports injury for deaf athletes. In conclusion it is suggested that team-based education program for sports injury prevention should be provided for disabled athletes.
